6 yrs 3 months

During spring break this year instead of our usual mission trip to Mexico we took a family vacation to Tahoe. We stayed in our friend's condo in Incline Village. We had a great, relaxing, fun 4 days. The weather was beautiful for spring skiing and playing at the beach. We drove up on Sunday afternoon April 3rd and drove home Thurs late afternoon May 7th. On the way home I read out loud Roald Dahl's book The BFG. We all enjoyed it.

Breathtaking view from the chair lift.
Monday morning we got to Diamond Peak at 8am for ski school. It was 5 min from the condo and the parking lot was essentially empty. No lines for tickets or rentals. It was lovely. Josie was taken care of until 11ish so we had the morning to ourselves. It was a little chilly in the morning in the shade but by 10 it was pretty warm. The blue hills were a little icy at the top and the steep parts were a little scary for me not having been on skis for probably 20 years. I managed to stay on my feet the whole day and enjoyed the blue hills and even the green ones with Josie.
Chair lifts were so empty. I couldn't get over the awesome views.
We ran into our friend PCC friends, Sid and daughter's Tea and Glory (they were in Mexico with us two years ago) in the parking lot and rode the chair lift with Sid and ate lunch together. His girls were more advanced then Josie but it was fun to see them through out the day.
Josie was a natural. It helped build her confidence in ski school and really liked her teacher Ben. She was actually a little too confident b/c wasn't scared to go fast down the hill. Eric finally got a strap from his truck to slow her down b/c she would get scared and fall down if she got going too fast. Day went better with the strap. Still there were some pouty faces.
Loved the strap.

It was getting pretty warm as the day went on and a little slushy. It helped slow Josie down.

Day 2 Eric and Josie slept in and Josie played with shopkins while I sorted through and edited pictures. It was so relaxing. Around 11 we drove about 5 min to the side of a hill to go sledding. A few other cars were parked. You had to actually walk pretty far to get to any incline. Fortunately it was sunny out and pretty warm but did need jackets.

At the condo were a few saucers we borrowed to spin down the hill.
We all walked pretty high for one good run and then Josie on her own walked way the heck back up until she was just a dot to do it again. It wasn't very steep but pretty far. She was determined to have a little more thrill in her life.

Our drive back down to the condo. Josie was pretty wet and cold so had to blast the heat and strip down to her undies. We were hungry and ready to get back to food and more relaxing.

We managed to pull away from playing and videos to scooter over to the park where people were sunbathing.
Scootering back home.
Day 3 we went back to Diamond Peak. We decided to do an hour of private lessons to get Josie comfortable on her own without the strap. She agree to do it only if Ben could be her instructor. Fortunately he was available. So we had two hours to ski on our own b/c you have to drop them an hour early to get all set up with their equipment. We had gotten half price lift tickets on Utopia.com which was so nice. Even though DP isn't as expensive as many other places it sure adds up when you are doing lessons and rentals for me. Eric brought his snow board and skis. It was easier to be on skis with Josie. After getting comfortable again on the one green hill from the first day we ventured over to another green which was a much longer run. She got to see the incredible views from this chair lift.

Lunch break in the summery weather.
The trail was getting pretty slushy and more like CC skiing in some sections. We were basically the only ones on it.
She did great on her own. It was so nice not have any crowds. I'm not sure how I'd feel have tons of people around and wondering if someone would ski into her or she into someone else.
At the end of the day she wanted to try skiing over the jump. With a few more times she would have gotten her landing perfect.
After we stopped around 3:30 we went home and took showers and then met up with our neighbors after their day of skiing at another resort. We ate dinner together and then went back to their cabin for a little bit. Josie and Kaira are best little friends.
Day 4 we slept in and then cleaned up the condo. We headed to Northstar in Truckee on the way home to rollerskate. We were a little too late in the season for ice skating which is what Josie would have enjoyed doing but she also really wanted to roller skate. It was hot out. Not the best surface b/c we were skating on cement. Probably makes for a nice ice rink. I kept thinking about how much it would hit if one of us fell. Eric didn't rent skates which was nice so he could help Josie. It was kind of a waste of $10 for me to get the skates but we had fun.
Luckily no injuries.
On the way home we stopped at a river right near the Hut but we didn't go to the Hut. It was really pretty driving along the river for awhile.
We ate dinner along the way and were home by bed time. Such a fun vacation. Josie can't wait to go skiing again. She wondered if there was summer day camp that included skiing.

Since we still had a day off on Friday Josie and I went to the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose. I had a groupon I purchased awhile ago. It was pretty crowded. I thought she'd pretty much outgrown it b/c she was hardly interested in any of the interactive pieces and didn't want go into the art studio to make a project. Maybe too crowded for her liking. But then we found another section tucked away and it was on health. Ah ha, we found our section. We both liked it and probably spent an hour in that part.

Oh yeah, she did like the water section too. She was very patient. She spent quite a bit of time putting the balls in the tubes waiting for something to happen.

Next we have the great fun of hosting Caroline, Miller and Miller's friend Trey on Saturday and Sunday. It was too short but we did a lot. I picked them up and we went right to the train station and took the BART to Berkeley. Trent and Tyler were both competing in the track meet against Stanford. Craig, Julie, Donna and Duane were there. It was a little mini reunion. Miller and Trey are both on the CC and track team so it was fun for them to see the meet and hang out with Trent and Tyler. Unfortunately it was a cloudy, semi rainy day but it was still fun.

Trent gave us a tour of the athletic facilities where their team hangs out and studies etc. They both involved in Athletes in Action and showed us where they have their meetings. We also got to meet their girlfriends pictured above.

On Sunday we hung out on the Stanford campus. We went to a cool exhibit on Elephants.
We went to the top of Hoover Tower. They ran a lap on the track.
Miller was injured so couldn't run much and Trey need to get a 12 mile run in so we walked at the Stanford Dish and we did a few hilly laps. Wow did he do that fast.

We had fun at home eating pizza and playing games like Mimic. We had some good laughs.
Caroline was demonstrating how to use the cool rhythmic gymnastic ribbon she gave Josie. A girl with hidden talents.

Josie had her Open House at school. It was fun to have her show us around. First we went to the MUR to see some art work on display. She's in Mrs. Logie's class.
Josie's work of art.
In the classroom she put on her tour guide hat that said "ask me anything". She has had a replica of her self at her table.
Josie loves Mrs. Logie and so do we.
We met Mrs. Logie's husband who happened to be on the PCC Mexico trip with Eric his first year when Josie and I didn't go. He remembered Eric and so many things about his and the Hut. Eric recognized him too but couldn't quite place it until he mentioned the Mexico trip. Small word.

This is a little side venture of my own. I had to be in SF at the Presdio Y and for the last year when I've had to go it's been a gorgeous day and I see the awesome view of the bridge but I always have to get back to a meeting at work. This time I cleared my schedule and enjoyed a walk with some great views.

Another of my own events but wanted to document it.
Stanford had this Sleep Revolution Fireside Chat with a sleep expert and Arianna Huffington and Andre Iguodala from the Warriors. It was so fun to hear him speak with Arianna. Sleep has really transformed his life and his career. His basketball stats have improved since he started making sleep a priority. The Warriors sure are having a great season this year on top of winning the championship last year.

Josie and Eric had their own event at school. They went to the Daddy Daughter Dance with Justin and Kaira. Turns out Eric only got 1 dance b/c all the girls she played together. He considered it a bust but I guess Josie had fun.
We also got to watch Matt's last high school tennis match. It was kind of a nail biter and in the end he pulled through. Way to go Matt! Josie loves her big cousin.
Eric, Josie and I went to my colleague Tia's house in Menlo Park and ate dinner with her and Adam. What a nice dinner they cooked for us. Tia let Josie cut flowers for us to bring home and Josie needed a flower to bring to school for teacher appreciation day. What a lovely garden they have. Josie loved cutting flowers and playing around in the backyard with pedals that had already fallen. She scattered them around as she played wedding.
Josie was the flower girl for Eric and me renewing our vows.
What a busy, fun month it's been.
